Did you know?

The first marmalades weren’t actually made from oranges. The word marmalade comes from marmelo, the Portuguese word for quince.

Joan of Arc ate quince jam before going into battle as it filled her with courage.

Jam was introduced to Scotland by Queen Mary Stewart in 1560, after her French husband died. She ate the jam when she felt sick!

A popular myth is that marmalade came to Britain in 1700, when a storm-damaged Spanish ship, carrying Seville oranges, sought refuge in Dundee harbour. James Keiller, a local merchant, bought the cargo cheaply and his wife turned it into a preserve.

To mark its 125th birthday in 2006, jam makers F. Duerr & Sons created the world’s most expensive jar of marmalade containing whisky, vintage champagne and edible gold leaf. It cost £5,000 – the equivalent of £76 per slice of toast!

In 2008, Paddington Bear ‘wrote’ My Book of Marmalade.

‘Elvish’ honey from caves in Turkey costs 5,000 euros per kilogram.
